Vintage Nautical Pastels

Hello there! Right now I am laying down in my cozies eating a bowl of rice and bread... I know... so healthy... haha! However, I have a stomach ache and apparently foods like that are supposed to help, but we'll see! I am also currently on the last season of That '70s Show and I don't want it to end!!! It is such a great show and I definitely recommend it!!! Enough with my ranting about my current couch shenanigans and let's get to this funky late 1960s/70s outfit!

When I traveled to Tennessee in November I stumbled upon a wonderful vintage clothing shop while walking the streets of Chattanooga and fell in love with this unique set (including top and pants)! The fabric detail is so pretty with a mixture of colors such as shades of purple, green, and pink. The collar is statement making, and the buttons are very nautical! My shoes and earrings came from a couple of my favorite reproduction businesses (details at bottom of post).

... And who said you can't be silly during photoshoots?!...

Swinging Lipsticks

Last night, I went to a 1960s style 2nd Chance Valentines Prom. Sure, it was a second chance prom... but being in only my sophomore year of high school without an older boyfriend (or any significant other for that matter), it was MY FIRST chance prom! The entire time, bands performed music from the 50s-70s, and both bands were quite good (despite not knowing some of the songs). It was so fancy with candlelit tables and red heart confetti; a perfectly unique night out for my family and I. The fashion we encountered was incredible. There was every color and every 1960s look present ranging from 1960 itself to 1969.

My favorite look of them all was a vintage sage green lace long-sleeve dress with a green headband, strappy heels, bulky pearl earrings, and black cat eye glasses. The lady who sported this look pulled it off with wonderful vintage hair flair and admirable confidence. It was not even a question that she won Prom Princess (I entered too but didn't win haha).

Anyway, this is what I wore... I went for a very early 1960s look when the swing style and red lips was still a thing. I loved wearing this dress while dancing, especially with the petticoat underneath! I received this dress as a Birthday gift in December, and I was so happy to find the perfect event to wear it to!

It is so comfortable and is sure to turn heads! You can find complete outfit details at the bottom of this post! Enjoy!

Rain or Shine

Good evening dolls! Over the weekend I went on a mini road trip with my family in celebration of my mom's upcoming birthday. We killed our wallets with plenty of shopping, ate an uncountable number of vegan cupcakes, bought vegan meats & cheeses, adopted two sweet baby hairless rats, and spent precious quality time together. It was a nice little three day getaway, but now I am back at home where I am drowning in work and school... but at least here I can continue sharing my vintage outfits of the day as usual and spend time with my pets!

On this blog post I will be briefly sharing with you two looks I sported last week; both very different! One to corresponds to a rainy day and one to corresponds to a sunny day, hence the blog title "Rain or Shine".

When Stripes & Space Collide

This week has been my exam week at school. Six giant exams in a matter of four days. I am a veteran at exam taking so it actually hasn't been that bad, considering that there is a stress relieving puppy who comes to my school and I get to get out of school early. I will be taking two more tests tomorrow, and I am doing my best to not stress or prepare until exhaustion.

Despite my business, I would love to share with you this 1960s space age look from a few days ago! Wearing some of my favorite vintage inspired brands and plenty of eyeliner, I was able to create a bold and dramatic mod look. I am not going to make this post lengthy since I need to go back to work soon... so let's get to it!

KrispyFringe Vintage Shoot

Over one month ago I came across an Instagram post of one of my favorite vintage shops, KrispyFringe Vintage, and the post stated that models were wanted. I have never actually "modeled" for a business before aside from advertising small companies through Instagram from my home. However, this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up!  Within days, I shot Kim from KrispyFringe an email about my interest in modeling for their cute little Etsy shop (and soon to-be storefront)! It was a lot of fun for my first time ever modeling in the heart of Chicago. The outfits I modeled were all stunning in their own ways. I just wish I could have taken it all home haha!

The first piece I got to wear were these beautiful 1970s Gold Patterned Bell Bottom/Palazzo Pants! Their print was gorgeous (and though we had to use a clothespin to keep them fit around my tiny waist), they were very comfortable. These beauties can be dressed up for a special occasion or kept casual for work related activities, but nevertheless they ought to make a statement!

Another beautiful ensemble worth mentioning is this Vintage 1960s Two Piece Mint Green Evening Dress and Feather Trim Jacket. It seems homemade, but is constructed with very soft materials with intricate gathering details of the fabric. The floor length dress beneath the jacket has spaghetti straps and can  flow around a ballroom majestically! Because of the jacket, it is perfect for outings in the midst of this harsh winter!

If you want to seem as if you just stepped off of the red carpet, this is the dress of your dreams! This Vintage Floor Length Multicolor Gold and Navy Blue Evening Gown Dress may need some ironing, but the rich colors and details of the brocade are priceless. In the shop you can find pictures of the front of the dress as well which is even more stunning!

A little bit funk and a little bit of youth can be found in this Vintage Handmade Olive Green and Yellow Gold Cowgirl Mini Skirt with Fringe and Pockets. The embroidery and fringe are adorable accents for this piece, and the shade of green fits the vibe wonderfully. Yee-Haw!

Next up, you can find a classy and sassy swing skirt. Again, with just a little ironing, this skirt can become a new staple in your closet. It is so versatile and beautiful! The Vintage 1950s Black Polka Dot Full Circle Skirt is deep black in color with a velvety print all throughout!

Some pastels and stripes can go a long way as proven by this little sweater. This Vintage 1960s Pink White and Blue Color Block Waffle Knit Sweater has such a pretty combination of flushed pinks and sky blue with a thick stripe of ivory! So comfortable, fitted, and nice for anytime of the year!

Springtime is right around the corner, and what better way to dress than wear an Audrey Hepburn-esque dress? This Vintage White and Light Pink Embroidered Cotton Floral Sun Dress has a moderate pencil feel to it and a conservative halter neckline. The fabric is extremely lightweight, and the little light pink embroidered flowers are so feminine and delicate. It is a must have for the warmer days... just imagine wearing it during a picnic... ahhhhhh.

Finally, I need to conclude with this Vintage 1980s Unisex Plaid White Tan Brown Earth Tone Sweater. It is the coziest thing I have worn in a long time... I just wish I could have taken it home with me! The colors are especially suitable to the nature lovers out there and can be styled in countless different ways-- with jeans, with leggings, with a skirt... you name it!

I'm sorry that I haven't been posting new outfit of the day posts with vintage flair. It has been so bitter cold and miserable outside. I haven't had the courage to fight the cold with cute clothes, but I hope to be dressing vintage regularly again soon! Thanks to this photo shoot, I am have plenty of fun photos to play with for the time being!

You can shop all of these items by simply clicking the name of the item you want to check out beneath the corresponding photo!

Have a beautiful night darlings!

Vegan Banana Bread

Being in the kitchen while baking up a storm is relaxing and stress relieving to me. It has always been something I have enjoyed doing. But since I became a vegan, baking and cooking feels even more rewarding, because I know that I am not putting any life into danger or harm. It is fascinating to bake vegan items and give them to people as holiday gifts or take the dishes to others' houses and the receiver is amazed by the fact it is vegan. There are countless alternatives out in this world making it easier and easier to make delicious food without supporting murder. One of my most recently used recipes is from my mom's side of the family passed on over generations... and now I would like to pass it on to you.

As you can tell, the original recipe is very tattered, stained, and taped to the point of no return. I continue to use this recipe that calls for animal products, but simply make the vegan conversions in my head. It is such a simple recipe with such an incredibly bold flavor. Let's get to it!

These are the brands I used in this batch of banana bread I am sharing, but of course you can use other variations to your liking... as long as they are vegan! And when bananas are concerned, just be sure they are ripe!

I preferably like mashing the bananas with a fork, but that is solely a personal choice on how you choose to mash them!

The batter at this point will be very heterogeneous and lumpy...

But that's okay! It will not likely become a smooth, homogeneous mixture until the flour is added.

And yes, I bake in my vintage clothing and sequin freckles haha! You can never go wrong in a vintage 1970s turtleneck from Baby Grandma Vintage and Eclipse earrings from Revere Folie!

Before adding the soy milk, the batter should be thick such as in the above picture.

After the soy milk? Nice, smooth, and tasty!

Ready to be popped into the oven... and don't be afraid to pile those walnuts on the top!

45 minutes later...

Once the banana bread cools (or even while its warm), I love to spread Smart Balance vegan butter on my bread. Perfect for a snack or breakfast... or any meal of the day really?! The bread does include all of the food groups in one way or another!

Classic Bling

I am not and never will be Audrey Hepburn. I am not and never will be Twiggy. I am not and... you see my point. There is a certain excitement that comes from being your own person. These two ladies along with many other men, women, and other people inspire me each day whether it be on morals, fashion, or talent. Despite how much you want to be like them, you will never be them and that is realistic because you are you. BUT who said you can't be impacted by them? This look was inspired by Audrey and Twiggy along with plenty of personal flair known as "Skylar" because there is no need for being someone you're not!

The sunglasses I am sporting are from Unique Vintage and are known as the 'Clear & Rhinestone Embellished Princess Mano Cat Eye Sunglasses' for their royal qualities. Their chrome-like lenses and silver, gold, and transparent embellishments ensure the ability to make a statement. A special thanks to my cousins for surprising me with these beauties for the holidays!

My dress is not from a vintage inspired label, but is from Target... otherwise known as my home haha! But, to put a more dominant retro twist on the modern LBD, I wore a black belt from Hip Hop '50s Shop around my waist to emit a stronger vintage vibe.

My shoes are the black penny loafers from Macy's that I mentioned in my previous post of which you can expect to see in plenty more of my looks. I think they will end up being my newest staple in my closet; so classy but so funky all at once!

This beautiful five strand faux pearl necklace with the darling embellished silver flower is from I Am An Audrey. It is a replica piece of the iconic necklace that Audrey Hepburn gracefully wore as Holly Golightly in the world renowned romantic comedy, Breakfast at Tiffany's. It is so classy and so accurate to the movie, simply breathtaking.

This flushed baby pink coat is also from Unique Vintage. It features a signature bow when the top button is clasped and is so soft and fashionable for any feminine 1960s admirer. You can find it as being the 'Retro Style Light Pink Bow Button Up Mod Jacket'.

PS. It is currently on sale for only $53.00! Get it fast before it sells out and before winter comes to an end!

Throughout this collection of photos you may have noticed the reflection in my sunglasses otherwise known as my amazing mom! Since you are probably reading this, mom, I want to thank you for being the best photographer for my blog and Instagram despite how strange I may be or how cold it can be outside!

Lots of love,

Skylar :-)
